U.S. weekly jobless claims increase, labor market remains tight

Weekly jobless claims increase 13,000 to 196,000

Four-week moving average of claims falls 2,500 to 189,250

*

Continuing claims rise 38,000 to 1.688 million

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) – The number of Americans filing new claims for EvdeN EvE nAKliyaT unemployment benefits increased more than expected last week, but the underlying trend continued to point to a tight labor market.

The jobs market has remained resilient despite growing economic headwinds from the Federal Reserve’s interest rate increases. While labor market strength keeps the U.S. central policy on its monetary policy tightening path, it also suggests that a much anticipated recession is nowhere near.

„We would be crying wolf if we said we thought there was a recession signal in the weekly unemployment claims data this week,” said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS in New York.”Recession is not around the corner with layoffs this low, and the downturn, if it is coming at all, is months away.”

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 196,000 for evdeN eVe NakLiyaT the week ended Feb.4, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was the first increase in claims since the second last week of December. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 190,000 claims for the latest week.

The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it strips out week-to-week volatility, fell 2,500 to 189,250, the lowest level since last April.Unadjusted claims rose 9,628 to 234,654 last week.

There was a jump in claims in California as well as notable increases in Ohio and Illinois. Those rises offset decreases in Georgia, New Jersey and Texas.

Claims have remained low despite high-profile layoffs in the technology industry as well as the interest rate-sensitive finance and housing sectors.Walt Disney and Zoom Video Communications added to the growing list of companies laying off workers, announcing 7,000 and 1,300 jobs cuts, respectively, this week.

Economists say most of the companies, especially in the technology industry, overhired during the COVID-19 pandemic. They noted that small businesses continued to seek workers.

There is anecdotal evidence that companies are generally reluctant to lay off workers after experiencing difficulties recruiting during the pandemic.

Workers remain scarce in some industries. There were 1.9 job openings for every unemployed person in December, government data showed last week. According to an Institute for Supply Management survey last Friday, some services businesses in January reported they were „unable to hire qualified labor,” saying that „supply is thin.”

U.S.stocks opened higher. The dollar fell against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury prices rose.

STRONG JOBS MARKET

Economists speculated that severance packages were delaying the filing of unemployment benefits claims, while the abundance of vacancies made it easier for laid-off workers to find jobs.

„If the company offers severance, the claims are not counted until the severance expires,” said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.”But even so, the job market remains remarkably strong.”

Economists also believed that seasonal adjustment factors, the model the government uses to strip out seasonal fluctuations from the data, were keeping claims lower.

The seasonal adjustment factors for 2023 will be updated at the end of March.Applying the average seasonal factors for the prior two years with the same calendar configuration as 2023 would put claims at 210,000 in the latest week and a four-week average of 200,000, according to Conrad DeQuadros, senior economic advisor at Brean Capital.

„Nonetheless, this would still be a low reading on claims and indicate that either involuntary separations remain low and/ or those who lose their jobs are quickly re-employed elsewhere,” DeQuadros said.”There is no sign of easing of labor market tightness here.”

The claims report also showed the number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid, a proxy for hiring, eVdeN evE nakliYAT rose 38,000 to 1. If you adored this article and you would like to obtain more details regarding EVDen eVE NaKliyat kindly check out our webpage. 688 million during the week ending Jan. 28.

Lower layoffs have been a major contributor to strong job gains. The government reported last Friday that nonfarm payrolls surged by 517,000 jobs in January, the most in six months, after rising by 260,000 in December. The unemployment rate fell to more than a 53-1/2-year low of 3.4% from 3.5% in December.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Tuesday that the central bank’s fight to tame inflation could last „quite a bit of time,” in a nod to January’s blowout job gains.Since March, the U.S. central bank has hiked its policy rate by 450 basis points from near zero to the 4.50%-4.75% range. Difficulty measuring methane slows plan to slash emissions

NEW YORK (AP) – Satellites, drones and airplanes equipped with infrared cameras will likely be the backbone of a new federal policy to fine the nation´s largest methane polluters.

But the nascent industry has a long way to go before it can accurately measure just how much methane polluters are releasing. And the nation´s new methane reduction program, which was passed as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, will allow the government to fine those polluters for methane emissions based on measurements taken in 2024.

That leaves little time to get a reliable system in place.

US wage growth slowed in the final quarter of 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) – Pay and benefits for America´s workers grew at a healthy but more gradual pace in the final three months of 2022, the third straight slowdown that could help reassure the Federal Reserve that wage gains won´t fuel higher inflation. Wages and benefits, such as health insurance, grew 1% in the October-December quarter compared with the previous three months. That marked a solid gain, though it was slower than the 1.2% increase in the July-September quarter.

Unprecedented profit for Exxon as travel, and war, heated up

NEW YORK (AP) – Exxon Mobil posted record annual profits in 2022 as consumers globally struggled with high prices for gasoline, home heating and consumer goods.

The energy giant brought in $55.7 billion in annual profits. That exceeded its previous record of $45.22 billion in 2008. Exxon´s bounty came as Americans shelled out $4 per gallon for gasoline in the U.S. during the spring and summer. Oil and natural gas prices surged globally after Russia invaded Ukraine and reduced its supply of energy to Europe.

The record profits were a marked turnaround from two years ago, when the coronavirus pandemic hit and travel ground to a halt, killing demand for fuels.

Wall Street climbs to add more to its strong January

NEW YORK (AP) – Wall Street closed out a strong January with more gains.

The S&P 500 rose 1.5% Tuesday, marking its third winning month in the last four. The Dow rose 1.1% and the Nasdaq rose 1.7%. The gains came ahead of what many investors hope will be one of the Federal Reserve´s last hikes to interest rates for a while.

Markets got a boost after a report showed that growth for workers´ pay and benefits slowed during the end of 2022. While that´s frustrating for people trying to keep up with soaring prices, markets see it as an encouraging sign of easing pressure on inflation.

Russia's Polymetal negotiates to keep London listing as GDRs

This content was produced in Russia where the law restricts coverage of Russian military operations in Ukraine

By Anastasia Lyrchikova

MOSCOW, Feb 9 (Reuters) – Russian gold and silver producer Polymetal is negotiating with British authorities to keep its London listing in the form of global depositary receipts (GDR) after the company moves to Kazakhstan, the company’s CEO told Reuters.

Polymetal last month said it was considering moving its parent company’s domicile and primary listing, currently in Jersey and London respectively, to „Russia-friendly” Kazakhstan, which „could unblock the ability to execute further corporate actions”.

The move would allow the company to spin off the Kazakh business, which accounts for about 38% of revenue and 32% of annual production. While domiciled in Jersey, deemed an „unfriendly” jurisdiction by Russia, no separation of assets is possible.

„We want to take the Kazakh business out of the shadows, out from under the canopy of sanctions,” CEO Vitaly Nesis told Reuters.”That’s why we have to split up the company first.”

Nesis said the company’s management was in discussions with the London Stock Exchange, the FCA regulator and service providers about retaining a form of LSE listing after the move to Astana and was counting on clarity within 1-2 months.

„We are applying maximum efforts to maintain our listing in London, but given the recent, ninth sanctions package…the task is not simple. Many service providers are reluctant even to engage in dialogue about securing a listing after the move.”

The decision about changing the listing will be put to shareholders and requires 75% approval. The European Union’s ninth sanctions package bars investment in Russia’s mining industry.

Mexico border prison break: Cartel leader among 30 inmates on the run

Thirty prisoners, including the leader of a feared cartel’s assassin squad serving a 224-year sentence, are still on the run after a deadly New Year’s Day prison break near the US border.

Security forces continue to search the region surrounding Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, for those who escaped in an attack that left 19 people dead.

Los Mexicles leader Ernesto ‘El Neto’ Piñón escaped the Cereso No.3 state prison on Sunday after members of the notorious street gang stormed into the penitentiary located just 16 miles from El Paso, , and helped him escape.

Authorities initially reported that César Vega, the criminal group’s second-in-command, had also escaped before later announcing he is among the seven inmates who were killed.

At least 200 members of the gang have since been moved from the prison. The brazen assault left ten prison guards and two attackers dead.

Inmates are rounded up outside the Cereso No.3 state prison in Ciudad Juárez following the New Year’s Day deadly attack that left 19 people dead

The Cereso No. 3 state prison was overpopulated by 123% at the time of the attack, National Commission of Human Rights director, Nestor Armendáriz, told Radio Formula.

The agency’s 2021 National Diagnosis of Penitentiary Supervision found that the prison was severely affected by overcrowding, lack of personnel and that not enough programs were being offered to prevent addiction and voluntary detoxification.

Saskia Niño del Rivera, cofounder of Reinserta, a non-profit that works with reintegrating and readapting convicts into society, called on the Mexican government to shut down the detention facility.

‘That prison has to be closed, it does not have the infrastructure to function, it does not have the elements, enough trained guards,’ Niño de Rivera told El Universal newspaper.

The activist pinned the prison’s unsavory conditions on the reality of the high presence of convicts who are members of the Los Jaliscos, Los Artistas Asesinos, Los Golfos and Los Mexicles street gangs.

‘It is a very complicated prison because of the way in which it has been divided by dormitories, and the complexity of closing them so that the same gangs do not clash internally is extremely complex,’ she said.

Niño del Rivera added that Cereso No. 3 state prison officials were simply overwhelmed because they were dealing ‘with inmates who have levels of crime and crime leadership capacity much higher than what a state has to control.’

The prisoners’ free reign allowed them to set up 10 jail cells that were equipped with electronic goods, such as televisions, and one of them had its own jacuzzi, according to Defense Minister Luis Cresencio.

Investigators searching Piñón’s cell found 10 firearms, 20 kilos of drugs, liquor EVDen eve NaKliYAT and a safe deposit box with $87,000.

Chihuahua State Attorney General Roberto Fierro vowed to restore the prison’s security system within three months while adding that they would seek to prosecute any official or guard involved in the attack that allowed Piñón and the other 29 inmates to escape.

‘Who did see it and who was allowing these actions, those are the ones who are going to bear the punishment because this should not have happened,’ Fierro said.’A series of corruption was discovered inside the prison; it must be said as it is.’

Piñón took the Los Mexicles top leadership spot after Jesús ‘El Lalo’ Soto was transferred out of the Cereso No. 3 state prison in February 2020.

He joined the gang as an 18-year-old in 2007 and was involved in numerous criminal incidents, including kidnappings, in Ciudad Juárez, where the faction acted as the main enforcer for Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s old Sinaloa Cartel.

Piñón was found guilty of kidnapping and murder in 2010 and sentenced to 224 years in prison.

Authorities say he was also involved in ordering a wave of assaults throughout Ciudad Juárez on August 11 that left 11 people dead, 20 injured and multiple vehicles and business torched.

At the same time, he organized a riot at the prison in an attempt to flee, but security forces were able to regain control.

The citywide assaults were part of a rift reportedly sparked by Los Mexicles’ fallout with the Sinaloa Cartel faction that is overseen by Los Chapitos – El Chapo’s children – as the gang formed new alliance with Los Aztecas, the armed wing of the Juárez Cartel.

Los Mexicles had also joined forces with the Caborca Cartel, the criminal organization founded by infamous jailed drug lord, Rafael Caro Quintero, who is awaiting extradition to the United States, evdEN eVE NAkliyAT where he is accused of the 1986 kidnapping and murder of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Kiki Camarena.

The Caborca Cartel is also at odds with Los Chapitos.

Vega served as Piñón’s main confidant at the prison, where they both shared a cell.

He was deported to Mexico in September 2015, almost four years after he was arrested at an El Paso, Texas, fried chicken restaurant.

Vega was detained December 27, 2011 at Church’s Chicken where he was employed as a cook a year after he fled from Mexican authorities after the ambush of the prison van he was being transported in, according to U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He and seven other Los Mexicles gang members abducted Natividad Torres at his Ciudad Juárez home on September 15, 2009.

The kidnappers sought a return of $47,000 in exchange for Torres’ release but ended up settling for just $700, a television and a 2008 Toyota. If you loved this article and you also would like to receive more info concerning evdEN EVE NAkLiyat nicely visit the web-site. Lt. Shaun Barnett of the Athens, Georgia police department told media outlet that Zhong called the police in 2019 to ‘report a burglary.’

Zhong was living in Athens, Georgia in 2019 when he called police and reported that he had many assets stolen, EVden EVE naKLiyAT including ‘a lot of bitcoin,’ which was apparently grabbed the attention of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) unit.

The cash was never recovered, nor was a suspect identified, but the burglary and amount of money reported stolen ‘raised a red flag with the IRS,’ Barnett said.

Following an investigation, a search warrant was served and the IRS-CI and Athens police department made an arrest in November of 2021.

Federal officials say the stolen Bitcoin was found when they served the search warrant at Zhong’s Georgia home, solving a decade-long mystery.

The digital tokens were hidden in a ‘single board computer’ that was stashed inside a popcorn tin and stored in a bathroom close of Zhong’s home.

Authorities also seized $662,000 in cash, physical Bitcoin coins, an 80 percent interest in a Memphis-based real estate investment company with substantial holdings, along with 11 1-ounce bars of silver and gold.

Prosecutors said Zhong executed a scheme to defraud ‘Silk Road’ dark web marketplace. They said he made nine accounts September 2012 and would then flood the site with withdrawal requests, which tricked the site into giving him multiples of what he had deposited.

After doing this 140 times, he had withdrawn all of the site’s cryptocurrency holdings. He then transferred the Bitcoin into separate accounts to keep it from being detected.

Italy pushes retail bonds, eyeing inflation and ECB tapering

By Sara Rossi and EvDen EvE NAKliyAt Valentina Consiglio

ROME, Feb 10 (Reuters) – The Italian Treasury is moving quickly this year to issue retail bonds, hoping to plug a gap soon to be left by the European Central Bank and anticipating strong appetite from savers whose deposits are being eroded by inflation.

The economy ministry said on Monday it would issue a new „BTP Italia” inflation-linked bond for retail investors from March 6-9, earlier than the traditional April-May period chosen over the last decade.

It has said it is also considering other instruments dedicated to domestic savers, as part of a strategy to put more of its huge public debt – proportionally the second highest in the euro zone – in Italian hands.

„We want to reduce our dependence on foreign creditors by increasing the number of Italians and Italian residents that hold our public debt,” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday.

Retail investors held about 9% of Italian public debt at the end of last year, according to Bank of Italy data.

Analysts say Rome is probably also capitalising on favourable market conditions as three similar BTP Italia bonds mature in April, May, and November for a total of nearly 25 billion euros ($26. The yield on Italy’s benchmark 10-year BTP bond stood at around 4.20% on Friday, compared with 4.70% at the end of December.

The Treasury has not issued three BTP Italia retail bonds in a year since the instrument was introduced in 2012 at the height of the euro zone debt crisis.

The importance of retail investors in purchasing BTPs will grow as the ECB withdraws its support.

The central bank last year ended its „quantitative easing” and emergency pandemic bond purchasing programme. It is continuing to reinvest part of the bonds it bought as they mature, while reducing its balance sheet.

INFLATION MENACE

Italian households’ bank deposits are larger than their euro zone peers, according to calculation by the Scope Ratings agency for evden Eve NAkliYaT the third quarter of 2022, based on ECB data.

Italians’ deposits amount to 86% of national output, the data shows, compared with 74% for EvDEn EvE NAKliYAt France and 81% for Germany and Spain.

„Italian households’ liquidity potentially offers the Treasury a growing investor base in the near future,” said Scope analyst Alvise Lennkh-Yunus.

However, these deposits are being rapidly eroded by inflation, and they declined last year for the first time since 2017 by almost 20 billion euros.

While consumer price growth in the 20-nation euro zone eased to 9.5% in January, in Italy it was still running at 10.9%.The ECB targets inflation at 2%.

„Italians’ savings are no longer safe because of the continuous surges in energy prices and inflation in general,” banking union Fabi said in a report this month.

The inflation-adjusted value of bank deposits has fallen far more steeply in Italy than in Spain, according to calculations by Spanish bank BBVA based on Bank of Italy and Bank of Spain data.

A trend that has seen Italian deposit rates lagging far behind lending rates is likely to continue in coming months, Fabi said, increasing the incentive for evdEN EVE NAKliyAt savers to invest in government debt.

„The 0.3% rise in mortgage rates and business loans in the year to September 2022 compares with an increase in deposit rates of just 0.05%,” the union said.($1 = 0.9303 euros)
